HOW TO SHOP SMARTLY ON ALIEXPRESS
AliExpress is one of the biggest shopping sites in the world. You can find a large percentage of the things, ranging from electronics to clothes to shoes to furniture and to car parts. To sum it up, if China makes what you are looking for, AliExpress has it.
However, even though AliExpress is quite popular, some people have never shopped from Aliexpress. You are probably scared of losing your money or do not know how things get to you. You have nothing to fear as shopping on AliExpress is safe and secure.
Here what you need to know to have a safe and secure shopping experience.
1. Setting up an account
First thing to do is to create an account on AliExpress. You can download the app by searching for “Aliexpress App” from your app store. The app is available for iOS and Android devices. I will advise that you use the AliExpress app as you get better prices and deals via the app.
Register an account with an email and choose a password you would remember, then go to your email address to confirm your email address.
Shopping from your PC is good but shopping via the app saves you some money than shopping on the main site.
2. Personalize your account
Once you are done installing the app, you can sign in and personalize your account. Go to “My Account” and click on the settings icon, click on “Account settings” and update your personal info and shipping address, while adding your shipping address include a valid phone number that is always reachable.
Tip: I will advise that you use an address that you are always present (house or office) that way you can know the postal office deliveryman located to your area.
I will talk more on postal service later in the most. You may get overwhelmed and want to buy everything you see just because it is cheap. Don’t do it!
In order for you to tailor down your preference of what you will love to shop from Aliexpress, Click “My Preferences “ and select your preferable choice. Click on Notifications and enable notifications you would love to get. I am always on Aliexpress app, so I virtually do not miss any upcoming promo, seller updates, order messages and what not.
Go to “My Wallet” and add your credit or debit card details. Adjust your country location to Nigeria, currency to Naira and language to English.
3. Start Shopping
Before you start shopping, I will advise that you search for products you want.
To get the best offers, Click ‘Sort’ and select ‘Price Low to High’ and the results will appears from the lowest to highest price. Personally, I leave it on “Best match”. Now go to ‘Filter’ and select ‘Free Shipping’. The result will now show only those sellers offering free shipping to your country.
Once you have found an item or items, add them to your favourite list by clicking the love icon at the right corner on the image. You can see you favourite list under “My Account”.
Why have I asked you to add items to your favourite list? It allows you not to rush to buy anything; you can find similar products for cheaper prices and create your own ultimate shopaholic guide.
The app algorithms identifies what you have added to your list the and only shows recommendations of things you like.
Now click the name or image of the product you want to buy to see more details of the product. On this page, go to “Item Description” for detailed information about the product like products specification images, size guide etc.
Make sure you read this carefully before placing your order. Also, check ‘Feedbacks’ for reviews of customers who have bought the same item. Ensure the reviews are mostly positive before placing your order.
How I shop from Aliexpress
In my case, when I need an item: let us say a dress. I look for similar products, seller rating, buyer reviews, and seller store products. Then I save it on my favourite list. Later I research for cheaper and similar products with good reviews.
Once I have found a suitable item, I move to the next phase, which is to find my right size using the provided size guide by the seller. I wear medium on most UK and US sites but with my measurements, my size fall under large section in Asian chart.
Everything from Aliexpress
Top from Shein, shop here.
polka dot dress from Simplee, shop here.
wrap belt, shop here.

Tip: The Asian size runs smaller than normal so it is advisable to know your size in metrics and buy a size higher or better still use the provided size guide by the seller on Aliexpress.
Presently, I have favourite stores I shop from on Aliexpress: Shein, Missord, Simplee etc. Apart from being a 5-star seller, their products are of good quality, with shipping most times at 2 weeks amongst other reasons. I still read reviews, I am sure I want the item, I add item to cart and checkout.
To place your order, select the colour, size, and the quantity of the product you are buying, in some cases, you also have to select the shipping location. I always select China because it is cheaper.
Tip: Stick with a particular store when you are sure you have gotten good products from them. Occasionally, you can explore other brands, that way you discover more brands.
Seller Discounts and Coupons
If you need more than one item or you are shopping for your business, you have the option to increase the quantity. Some seller give out discounts when you are buying more than one item.
Secret tip: You can contact the seller. If they agree to give a discount, which is automatically applied. All you have to do is try to purchase the item and cancel the purchase afterwards. Your order moves to a section called “orders awaiting payment”. The seller can adjust the price and you can go ahead to complete the purchase.
You can also get coupon, the only difference is that you have to get by yourself. Let’s say you are buying something worth $35 ≈ ₦10,807.84 , you can save $4 ≈ ₦1441.05 by grabbing the $2 ≈ ₦720.53 coupon and combining it with the seller discount of $4 which you qualify for if your order is up to $35.
Now, you have gotten the item you want to buy, add it to cart and proceed to checkout.
4. Make Payments
Once you get to checkout, review your order. Double-check that your address and phone number are correct. Select “Pay Now”. Remember, you already added your card when setting up your account so you do not have to put your card details every time you are checking out.
Congratulations, you have now successfully placed your Aliexpress order.
Once your payment is accepted, your order moves to a new tab: “Payment Awaiting Confirmation”. Confirmation does not take more than 24 hours before moving to Orders Awaiting Shipment. You get a notification when your order is shipped.
Shipped orders will be classified under the “Goods Awaiting Confirmation” tab. You can access all the tabs when you select “My Account”.
5. Track your order
Depending on the shipment method used, your order should arrive between 10 to 60 days. You get a tracking number of your order. You can communicate with the seller between the period of payment if you want to change something before your order is shipped and after your order arrives.
I will advise you check the item thoroughly; making changes can prolong the shipping process.
To track your order, go to ‘My Orders’ on your Aliexpress account, then click on the order you want to track and click ‘Track Now’. Alternatively, you can as well copy your order number, paste it in to the shipping company tracking portal to see tracking details of your order.
6. Collect your order – Post office in Nigeria
If your selected shipping methods like Aliexpress Standard Shipping, China Post, Post NL etc. You will then receive your order within 2 to 4 weeks.
Your order is sent to the nearest Nigeria Post Office close to you. A NIPOST deliveryman allocated to your location will contact you. You will need to pay handling fee of at most N1000 depending on the weight of your package.

However, with these shipping methods, you will have to pay a very high shipping cost. Most times, it is more than double the price of the item. Moreover, you may end up paying customs charges at the end of the day.

AliExpress is not a perfect site but it takes customer satisfaction seriously. If there is an issue with your order such as it being wrong or partially damaged or not arriving at all, you can open a dispute. When you open a dispute, you can decide to request for a full or partial refund.
Some sellers might tell you to message them privately if there is an issue and they will resolve it for you. You can decide to settle for that and not open a dispute.
AliExpress strives to make sure, only original and quality items are listed on the site, so if you get a fake, substandard item or nothing at all, endeavour to leave an honest feedback so that other buyers can avoid the seller.
In a case where you do not get you orders before the shipping time elapse, “Open a Dispute”. To open a dispute, go to “Goods Awaiting Confrimation” click on the item and scroll down to click on “OPEN DISPUTE”.
In case you have an issue with payment or a bad seller that is probably not responding to your dispute, you can reach out to the AliExpress team on the desktop site by clicking on the Help Tab, and selecting customer service.
